The Golden Ratio
The golden ratio is a mathematical phenomenon found throughout the universe that follows the pattern in the Fibonacci sequence (ex: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144). Each number is the sum of the two numbers that precede it.
Straddling both geometry and arithmetic, this simple pattern appears to be a kind of built-in numbering system to the cosmos. Also known as the golden ratio, this formula’s ubiquity and astounding functionality in nature suggests its importance as a fundamental characteristic of the universe.
The golden ratio is what creates pleasing proportions found in nature. From a sunflower’s inner spirals to the spiral shape of a Nautilus shell, this pattern is ever-present in the natural world.

The golden ratio, or golden mean, represented by the Greek letter phi (ϕ), is an irrational number that approximately equals 1.618.
The golden ratio results when the ratio of two numbers is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two numbers.
